Launch of Technical Blog
Gibtelecom, has today launched “TechKnowZone”, a technical blog which will feature blog posts highlighting the latest developments in the technical world. Fraudulent Emails
Gibtelecom issued a statement today warning its customers of fraudulent emails. The Company has been made aware that emails have been received by some customers from rogue addresses, such as ‘webmaster@gibtelecom.net’, giving the impression that Gibtelecom are requesting client details (usernames and passwords) to be returned to them. Such requests are fraudulent and under no circumstances should be responded to. More
Gibtelecom celebrates Apprenticeship Scheme success
Gibtelecom celebrated the successful completion of the third year of its communications apprenticeship programme, launched in 2008 in partnership with the Department of Employment, Labour and Industrial Relations (on behalf of the Government Gibraltar), with the award of various National Vocational Qualification certificates (NVQ) to sixteen apprentices on Wednesday 14 September 2011. The Company runs this scheme alongside its work placement, sponsored undergraduate and summer employment schemes for university students. More
Gibtelecom supports local students
Gibtelecom supports a number of student schemes, including offering placements to university students over the summer and the sponsored undergraduate scheme, which is now in its ninth year and aimed at university undergraduates studying a scientific or technical discipline. The Company offers around 30 local university students employment over the summer break each year – with 450 placements, representing around 250 students, having worked with the Company to date. More
Brian Asquez retires
Gibtelecom’s Resources Director, Brian Asquez, recently retired from the Company after 39 years service. Brian has been an Operational Director since January 1992, with Gibraltar Nynex Communications Ltd (GNC) and subsequently as Director of Resources at Gibtelecom. Brian joined the Gibraltar Telephone Department (GTD) in 1972 as a Test Clerk, following two years at Cable and Wireless. When the GTD was privatised in 1990 to become GNC Brian was appointed Engineering Manager. GNC then merged with Gibtel Ltd in 2001 to form Gibtelecom Ltd. More
Gibtelecom brings new telecommunications cable to Gibraltar
Following the announcement earlier today by the Europe India Gateway (EIG) submarine cable consortium that they began to accept delivery of the first part of the EIG cable system, Gibtelecom will shortly commence activation of its portion of this new cable system. Gibtelecom, Gibraltar’s leading telecommunications provider, has been a member of the EIG consortium since the initial stages of the project in 2007. Today the EIG consortium announced that they are accepting delivery of more than 11,300km of the total 15,000km EIG cable system, and 11 of the 13 landing sites. One of the accepted cable system routes is Bude (UK) - Portugal - Gibraltar – Monaco/Marseilles – Libya, with Gibraltar being one of the EIG cable landing sites that is ready for activation. More
Local & International Directory Enquiry Announcement ends
The Gibtelecom announcement advising customers to re-dial the correct directory enquiries numbers (11811 for local enquiries and 11888 for international enquiries) will be removed on 31 January 2011. Customers dialling the old numbers (195 and 196 respectively will hear a ‘number unobtainable’ tone, as from 1 February 2011. More
Time up for 195 and 196!
Gibtelecom reminds that the old directory enquiry numbers, 195 and 196, will no longer be available, as of Friday 1 October 2010. Despite the Company’s extensive advertising campaign in the local media and on television and radio, 9 out of every 10 customers calling the directory enquiry service last week were still dialling the old numbers. As from Friday 1 October callers dialling the old numbers will hear an announcement advising them that they have misdialled and that they need to dial the new directory enquiry numbers - 11811 for local directory enquiries and 11888 for international directory enquiries. The old 195 and 196 numbers are being withdrawn at midnight on Thursday 30 September. More

Gibtelecom reminded customers that, as of 1 October 2010, they will need to dial the new directory enquiry numbers - 11811 for local directory enquiries and 11888 for international directory enquiries. The old 195 and 196 numbers are being withdrawn the day before (30 September 2010) to coincide with the issue of the new 2010-11 Gibtelecom Gibraltar Telephone Directory. More
Gibtelecom roaming tariffs cheaper than EU roaming rates
Gibtelecom has announced that its EU roaming rates are lower than the new reduced Eurotariffs, set by the European Commission with effect from 1 July 2010.
The European Commission has with effect from this month implemented the next phase of its EU wide roaming caps, which started in 2007. It has capped the price for making or receiving phone calls to EU destinations, sending SMSs and data usage whilst travelling within the European Union. The charge for outgoing calls has been reduced from €0.43 to €0.39 per minute and the price for receiving a call has been reduced from €0.19 to €0.15 per minute. More
Gibtelecom launches ninth year of undergraduate scheme
Gibtelecom last week announced the start of recruitment for their Company Undergraduate Scheme, which is now in its ninth year. The scheme is aimed at students who have recently completed their A Levels and who will be going to university to study a technical discipline in September 2010. Students who are accepted onto the Scheme receive support from Gibtelecom by means of a laptop computer, financial support and employment at the Company during university holidays. As the leading provider of telecommunications services on the Rock, Gibtelecom is looking to support students who have an interest in learning about the rapidly changing technological environment in which the Company operates. Gibtelecom receives 'Recognised for Excellence' accreditation
Gibtelecom has been awarded the 'Recognised for Excellence' accreditation from the European Foundation of Quality Management (EFQM), a first for a Gibraltar company. Following an on-site assessment and evaluation by a team of EFQM assessors, which included interviews and focus groups with a wide cross-section of employees, the company was awarded 4 star recognition under the EFQM scheme. The award, said a Gibtelecom spokesperson, "is a clear signal for our customers that the company uses the best, well-tested and universally recognised practices in the area of leadership, partnerships and business strategy. The assessors were particularly impressed with the company's strong customer focus, financial performance and management of technology, as well as the empowerment of employees". More
