Using your mobile while travelling abroad

Anyone with a Gibtelecom mobile can use their phone abroad – regardless of what plan you’re on!

Please note that roaming charges apply so if you’re staying in Gibraltar we recommend that you switch your phone to manual network selection in order to prevent accidental roaming. EU roaming charges are regulated by the EU. Calls, SMSs and data usage outside the EU are dependent on distant operator charges and may be high.

Global GSM roaming

GSM roaming allows you to use your mobile phone whilst logged on to other operator’s networks when abroad, if Gibtelecom has a roaming agreement with them.

When roaming, tariffs are dependant on distant operator charges and mayb be high. This includes SMS and MMS messages. Charges also apply on calls and MMS message received when roaming.

Roaming within the European Economic Area (EEA)

Calls made whilst travelling within the 30 EU member countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and UK) are charged as follows:

• Outgoing calls: 29p per minute
• Receiving calls: 9p per minute
• SMS: 9p per message

Maritime roaming

You can use your mobile while on certain ferries and cruise ships. GSM and GPRS roaming services are available with ‘Cellular at Sea’ (part of AT&T Mobility). The maritime roaming service provides coverage for passengers and crew members on board ferries and cruise ships.

Mobile internet roaming

Browse the internet abroad with Gibtelecom’s Mobile Internet using GPRS and 3G, with an increasing number of operators worldwide.

If you have a post-paid plan, Mobile Internet traffic generated whilst roaming will not form part of any bundles or free usage. Data rates are dependent on distant operator charges.

If you have a reload account, Mobile Internet traffic generated whilst roaming (including sending and receiving MMS) is charged at 75p per MB within the EU and 1p per KB in other countries. Sent MMS are subject to a minimum charge of 20p.

NB: Where no tick is displayed in the 'reload outgoing' column you may use short codes to make calls as follows: dial *111*number# and wait for your mobile to ring you back. Answer and you will be connected to the number you dialled. You may try this facility in Gibraltar for familiarisation. Please call 194 for more information.

Using your reload abroad

Reload customers can use their mobile abroad to receive calls and send and receive SMS messages with all operators with which Gibtelecom has a roaming agreement with, providing the account balance is sufficient. Outgoing calls can also be made with an increasing number of operators. You can check which operators this service is available with by selecting your destination country from the drop down box above.

To check your reload account balance abroad dial *100# and press send. To top-up your account balance abroad you can either click the ‘reload online’ tab at the top of this page and replenish online using a credit or debit card, or use a reload scratchcard and dial *101*scratchcard number# and then press send.
