Internet support
Please see the answers to some FAQs below. If you can’t find the answer that you are looking for then call 20052200 or email customerservice@gibtele.com for general enquiries.
Do I need a phone line to use the internet?
Yes. Whether you subscribe to our dial-up or ADSL internet service you will need a phone line to provide a direct connection between your home or office and Gibtelecom so that we can connect you to the internet. Prices quoted for the internet assume you already have a fixed line but should you want your line for internet use only (i.e. with both incoming and outgoing calls being barred) you can subscribe to our internet only line at a cheaper price of £3 per month.
Will using the internet affect my phone line?
If you subscribe to the ADSL service then no it won't - the internet is available 24 hours a day without any interruption to voice services. However, if you subscribe to dial-up you are essentially making a 'call' to the internet everytime you go online and paying for what you use - this means you cannot use the internet and make phone calls at the same time even though the line has the capability for both.
Will I get the ADSL speed I signed up for?
Yes. Gibtelecom's WOW ADSL service provides a dedicated and reliable connection to the internet. Unlike other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) Gibtelecom doesn't share bandwidth between users, i.e. the bandwidth is uncontended. This means that you get the speeds that you pay for.
How do I report a fault?
If you experience any problems with your internet service call our freephone number 192. You will need to provide the Gibconnect account number of the affected line and details of the fault, if known. Depending on the nature of the fault we will either troubleshoot with you over the phone or send out a skilled engineer to fix the problem on site.
How do I set up my Gibtelecom e-mail address?
Gibtelecom internet customers are entitled to an @gibtelecom.net email address.
You can access your email via Microsoft Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger or alternatively through Gibtelecom's webmail service, which allows you to access your emails wherever you are.
For webmail click the link at the top of the page and enter your email login details.
For Outlook and Netscape configuration guides click here.
How do I configure my modem/wireless router?
In order to access the internet you will need a modem/router. One is provided to you when you initially subscribe to Gibtelecom's internet service, and they are also available for purchase at the Gibtelecom shop at John Mackintosh Square.
For step by step guides on how to configure your modem or router click here.
If I change my ISP will I need to change my email address
That depends on your current e-mail account and provider. Web-based e-mail clients, like Googlemail or Hotmail, will not be affected by a change to the ADSL service. However if you hold your email account with your ISP then this may be affected. Your Internet Service Provider will be able to advise on this.
