With more than 27,000 customers for its GSM services, Gibwireless has consistently kept ahead of its rivals in the fast-moving and competitive mobile phone market. Though the bulk of mobile customers take advantage of the prepaid service, one quarter of the company’s customers opt for a post-paid service and have their mobile costs charged to their accounts.
 
Mobile phone technology is constantly advancing and Gibtelecom has kept pace with developments including the advent of data access via mobile phones. The company’s £1.5 million deal with Ericsson was heralded as “opening up a new era for mobile telephony in Gibraltar”, and indeed the £2.2 million investment in a new 3G network allows faster and permanent connectivity for all mobile users as well as providing high-speed picture messaging and video calling for owners of suitably equipped hand-sets.
