Gibtelecom Brings Reliable Mobile Connectivity to Gibraltar’s Historic World War II Tunnels

Innovative indoor mobile solution brings reliable voice and high-speed data services to one of Gibraltar’s most iconic visitor attractions.

Gibtelecom has successfully deployed a state-of-the-art indoor mobile coverage solution throughout the World War II Tunnels, ensuring visitors and staff can enjoy reliable voice calls, messaging and mobile data services deep within the historic underground attraction. The new system delivers 4G and 5G connectivity in an environment where traditional mobile signals are unable to penetrate the surrounding limestone rock.

Designed specifically for the unique challenges of the tunnels, the deployment uses Ericsson's advanced Radio Dot technology to extend mobile coverage throughout key visitor areas. The solution incorporates environmentally protected Radio Dot units housed within specialist IP67-rated enclosures to withstand the moisture and water ingress conditions commonly found within the underground network.

Every year, the World War II Tunnels welcome thousands of visitors from around the world. Reliable mobile connectivity enables tourists to remain connected with family and friends, share their experiences in real time, access online information and navigation services, and enjoy a more connected visitor experience throughout their journey underground. The solution creates a high-capacity mobile environment capable of supporting large numbers of simultaneous users while maintaining a discreet footprint within the historic attraction.
