Gibtelecom launches 'Gibraltar Calling' Exhibition celebrating 155 years of communications history
October 01, 2025

Gibtelecom has launched a new exhibition, 'Gibraltar Calling: 155 Years from Analogue to Digital,' to be held at the Garrison Library from Friday 3rd October to Friday 24th October.
The exhibition will take visitors on a journey spanning over a century and a half, chronicling the evolution of global and local communication since the first submarine telegraph cable landed in Gibraltar in 1870. It highlights Gibraltar’s connectivity to the wider world and celebrates the transition from early analogue telegraphy and telephony to the high-speed digital world of today.
A story of innovation and collaboration
'Gibraltar Calling' showcases the relentless innovation and essential collaboration that have shaped telecommunications on the Rock. The exhibition is a joint effort, curated by Gibtelecom, the Garrison Library, and the PK Museum of Global Telecommunications, all of whom have deep historical ties to Gibraltar's connectivity story. It features rare artefacts, historical documents, and interactive displays that bring the past to life.
The exhibition was officially opened by Sir Joe Bossano MP, Minister for Telecommunications, on Thursday 2nd October, marking the start of a three-week period dedicated to celebrating this vital aspect of Gibraltar's heritage.
Engaging the next generation
A core element of the exhibition is its focus on education, with over 200 local school children scheduled to attend interactive tours and workshops throughout the three-week run. These sessions are designed to engage young minds with the history of technology and inspire future innovators.
Gibtelecom’s Director Global, Rab Paramothayan, commented on the significance of the exhibition: “From the minute the first telegraph cable brought Gibraltar into instant contact with the wider world, our community has kept pace with the rapid developments in global connectivity. The 'Gibraltar Calling' exhibition is a testament to the incredible journey from a single copper cable in 1870 to the robust fibre and mobile networks that connect our global points of presence and power our digital lives today. We are proud to have collaborated with the Garrison Library and the PK Museum to tell this vital story of how communication and collaboration have shaped modern Gibraltar."
